In Slovakia there are state and private health care providers. An initial medical examination is provided by state or private general practitioners. You can receive health services in the following areas: primary health care, specialist out-patient care, hospital treatment, dental treatment, rescue services and ambulance transport.
EU/EEA citizens: in case of need to provide for medical care, a student from a member country staying temporarily in the territory of Slovakia is entitled to free health care on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or in particular cases on the basis of a special certificate. The student is obliged to present one of these documents (it is advisable to have also a copy) together with an identity document directly to the public health care provider.
Students outside EU/EEA countries are advised to consult medical insurance authorities in their home country in order to ensure that they have valid insurance during their stay in Slovakia. When they do so, they are entitled to visit any general practitioner. A valid insurance card is required in all cases of medical care. You can get prescription medicine only at pharmacies called ‘Lekáreň’ in Slovakia (marked with a green cross). In every town there is always one emergency pharmacy open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Here you can get aspirin and general painkillers over the counter without prescription. If you currently take medication, please bring an additional prescription and a letter from your doctor explaining why you need to take this medication (prescription dosages, etc.). In case you run out of medication, it will be easier for you to get what you need. If possible, bring enough medication with you to last throughout your stay.
